Murrells Inlet History
Murrells Inlet, SC, the “quaint fishing village”, is rooted in history and ghost stories. The town was officially named Murrells Inlet in 1913 by the post office, but the history goes back hundreds of years. Legend has it that Blackbeard roamed around the land that is now Murrells Inlet and buried some treasure here! Our tidal creeks were also a great hiding spot for pirates waiting to attack English ships.
In the 1800s, the fertile soil Murrells Inlet was filled with rice plantations. Those rice plantations were the main source of business for Murrells Inlet until the early 1900s. As with most of America, the economy of Murrells Inlet suffered during The Great Depression. An economic boom came during the Depression when Archer Milton Huntington developed his 9,000 acre estate – his estate ran from the ocean to the rivers. Today, the home, Atalaya, is part of the Huntington Beach State Park, and the gardens created Brookgreen Gardens.

The beautiful land of Murrells Inlet is now home to many full-time residents and the short-term home of people from across the country looking for some relaxation. In Murrells Inlet, you can purchase anything from a small condo to use for your vacation home to a 7+ bedroom estate. Properties here can have views of the water, both inlet and river, or views of golf courses and often are dotted with Spanish moss covered oak trees that are hundreds of years old.
Shopping
A grocery store is only a few minutes away as Lowes Food Store, Food Lion and Publix have stores in Murrells Inlet. Murrells Inlet offers many shopping options for the young and young at heart including Hannah B’s – a children’s boutique, Inlet Square Mall, Booty’s Outdoors – fishing supplies and men’s clothing, Socialite – cute ladies clothing boutique, RSVP Shoppe – stationery and gifts, Lazy Gator, LD Bags and Pluff Mudd.
Dining and Entertainment
Murrells Inlet bridges both past and present perfectly. In some areas of Murrells Inlet, you feel like you have gone back in time by hundreds of years. 
Parks and Recreation
As you can imagine, the outdoors are center to many activities in Murrells Inlet. Grab some bait at Perry’s Bait and Tackle before you hit the water. Enjoy paddle boarding, kayaking, sunset cruises, dolphin cruises, parasailing, banana boat rides, jet ski rentals and more at Express Watersports. In the summer, you can enjoy kayaking, paddle boarding and more at Huntington Beach State Park. Basketball and baseball fans can play at Wachesaw Ball Park off Old Kings Highway. Other great outdoor activities include the Morse Park Landing and the bike path (runners and walkers are also welcome!) that starts on the south end of Murrells Inlet and travels through Huntington Beach State Park down to Pawleys Island.
Golf is another popular hobby in Murrells Inlet. You can enjoy a day of golf at Wachesaw Plantation, Wachesaw East, TPC, Blackmoor, International Club, Indigo Creek and Indian Wells.
Commute
With many roads and access to highways, you can live in Murrells Inlet and enjoy the slower-paced life while being close to everything. The Myrtle Beach Airport is about a 30 minute drive from Myrtle Beach. Charleston, SC is about a hour and a half drive.
Schools
Part of Murrells Inlet is in Horry County and part of Murrells Inlet is in Georgetown County. The Horry County section of Murrells Inlet is served by St. James Schools while the Georgetown County section of Murrells Inlet is served by Waccamaw Schools.
